The Friends of Kelvingrove Square

This Newsletter comes to you after the successful event on 16th May. The dawned dry – if a little chilly
– and the Dept. of Land and Environmental Services had done us proud in preparing the ground for us
with at least two mowings during the previous week.
Nicola was on duty from 7.30 a.m. clearing away
dog dirt and defending the Square from any further
pollution. In no time at all the marquee was erected
and Susan Galloway’s magnificent banner was
strung between poles.
The rest of the morning
was spent organising the various activities that were
to take place – papermaking, public consultation,
RSPB, planting, the Quiz etc. Once again LES
came up trumps with tables and chairs as well as a
good selection of plants for the new borders.
By 12 noon everybody was ready and our Local
Councillors appeared to give us good cheer. The
day went well with a good response to the Public
Consultation with 25 comments posted on the
boards and 40 preferences noted. Subscriptions,
sales of books, stationery and turned items together
with a number of donations and the Quiz netted just
over £120, sorely needed funds to cover the costs of
organising the event.
Our thanks must go to all those Committee
Members who did such sterling work in organising
the various events as well as those volunteers who
assisted on the day. The end result, apart from the
boost to funds and many sheets of hand-made
paper, is the permanent legacy of a tidy square,
flowers in the borders and hopefully an appreciation
by local people of the considerable asset that
Kelvingrove Square is for our community.
The success of the day was noted by our local
Councillors and the Committee have been invited to
make a presentation to the next Area Committee
meeting in August. It also helped to allow the Area
Committee to award a Start-up Grant to the Friends
of £250.
The results of the Public Consultation will be used to
assist in developing further plans for Kelvingrove
Square in conjunction with the department of Land &
Environmental Services in the near future. Watch
this space!
Final Note:- The winner of the (very hard) photo quiz
was Susan Galloway.
