Newsletter No 3 - Public Consultation on proposals Saturday and Sunday 5th and 6th Deecember at An Clachan cafe in Kelvingrove Park.

Following our successful event in May discussions were held with staff in the planning department of Land and Environmental Services which resulted in them preparing plans for the redevelopment of Kelvingrove Square based on the results of the consultation. In addition our own Mike Hyatt prepared plans and these were all presented to the Committee at their meeting in September. The general opinion was that both proposals were outstanding and they now form the basis of a further Public Consultation which will be held on Saturday and Sunday, 5th and 6th December at the An Clachan café in Kelvingrove Park from 10.00 a.m. to 12 noon on both days. ( Opposite the end of N Claremont Street)
The proposals include a bound gravel area under the trees on the west side of the Square, raised beds, a serpentine path and a water feature.
Mike’s plan is shown below. It includes a bog garden, a Restaurant garden, a Buddhist garden, circular seats and low snaking mounds.

Come along to the consultation and let us hear your views on these proposals.

Meanwhile the Committee has also been active in looking after the Square with general tidying of the flower beds and, courtesy of Land and Environmental Services, planting snowdrops and other bulbs in preparation for the Spring.

If you want to help or want to express your views don’t hesitate to contact us. Visit our new blog at www.fksq.wordpress.com where you can find this newsletter and up-to-date information about events taking place in the Square.
See you in December.

This Newsletter comes to you after the successful event on 16th May. The dawned dry – if a little chilly
– and the Dept. of Land and Environmental Services had done us proud in preparing the ground for us
with at least two mowings during the previous week.
Nicola was on duty from 7.30 a.m. clearing away
dog dirt and defending the Square from any further
pollution. In no time at all the marquee was erected
and Susan Galloway’s magnificent banner was
strung between poles.
The rest of the morning
was spent organising the various activities that were
to take place – papermaking, public consultation,
RSPB, planting, the Quiz etc. Once again LES
came up trumps with tables and chairs as well as a
good selection of plants for the new borders.
By 12 noon everybody was ready and our Local
Councillors appeared to give us good cheer. The
day went well with a good response to the Public
Consultation with 25 comments posted on the
boards and 40 preferences noted. Subscriptions,
sales of books, stationery and turned items together
with a number of donations and the Quiz netted just
over £120, sorely needed funds to cover the costs of
organising the event.
Our thanks must go to all those Committee
Members who did such sterling work in organising
the various events as well as those volunteers who
assisted on the day. The end result, apart from the
boost to funds and many sheets of hand-made
paper, is the permanent legacy of a tidy square,
flowers in the borders and hopefully an appreciation
by local people of the considerable asset that
Kelvingrove Square is for our community.
The success of the day was noted by our local
Councillors and the Committee have been invited to
make a presentation to the next Area Committee
meeting in August. It also helped to allow the Area
Committee to award a Start-up Grant to the Friends
of £250.
The results of the Public Consultation will be used to
assist in developing further plans for Kelvingrove
Square in conjunction with the department of Land &
Environmental Services in the near future. Watch
this space!
Final Note:- The winner of the (very hard) photo quiz
was Susan Galloway.
